Grant Schemes Available

On 12th May 2011, the Environment Agency announced the list of successful applicants for a £2m grant scheme that will help hundreds of householders better defend their homes against flood damage.

The money is being made available to selected Local authorities, who had applied for the grant earlier in the year. It has been allocated to areas where properties are at a high risk of flooding and there are no plans for a community level flood defence in the foreseeable future.

In total over £2.3 million pounds has been distributed across the country, with an average per property grant of nearly £4,000.

Environment Minister, Richard Benyon has said “Flood protection isn’t only about building and maintaining defences – it’s also about being prepared to deal with floods when they happen. Property level protection can be incredibly successful in communities that suffer low-level flooding, and these grants will ensure more homes and possessions can be protected.”

Whilst this round of funding has already been allocated, schemes such as this happen around twice a year. If you have been flooded in the last 10 years then it would be a good idea to contact your local authority to find out if they are applying for funding under the scheme. Any funding request from the local authority will be assessed by the Environment Agency locally and, if they qualify, will be forwarded to the EA's head office for action.
