Grants and Other Financial Assistance

DEFRA announce new grant funding for residential property flood protection and resilience...

Building upon recommendation 12 of the Pitt Review, Secretary of State Hilary Benn announced the £5m scheme on the 17th December 2008.

Properties in the areas that are awarded funding will be provided with free home flood surveys and a grant towards the cost of the flood protection measures that are identified in those surveys.

Local authorities need to apply for funding under the first round of scheme by 17th March 2009. £2m has been allocated to this round with the remaining £3m expected to be released in Autumn 2009.

If you have been flooded in the last 10 years then it would be a good idea to contact your local authority to find out if they are applying for funding under the scheme. Any funding request from the local authority will be assessed by the Environment Agency locally and, if they qualify, will be forwarded to the EA's head office for action. There are a number of grant schemes available to provide financial assistance to both home owners and businesses for the protection of their property from flooding.

These grant schemes involve a number of organisations including local authorities, water companies, the Environment Agency and DEFRA.

We will endeavour to provide as comprehensive guide to schemes that we are aware of and if you know of any schemes that are not listed here, we would appreciate it if you would let us know through our contact page.

If you can't find any schemes for your area listed here, it is always worth talking to your local authority first. Whilst they won't necessarily run schemes themselves, they should be aware of any assistance that may be available from central government or other sources of support.
