In Swaledale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales
National Park, two people had a dream. Those people
were Stuart and Brenda Price and their dream was to
create the ideal mountain bike centre where people
would come to learn and improve their mountain
biking skills and enjoy the outstanding natural beauty
of the Dales.
They spent two years getting planning permission
from the National Park to redevelop a derelict stone
barn in Fremington and, with support from Yorkshire
Forward and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust,
they turned their dream into reality.
The centre is now fully open with everything you
could possibly want from a bike centre including
accomodation and a café that specialises in locally
sourced food.
The key to success for a project like this is to consider
everything and this is exactly what Stuart and Brenda
have done.
Within the planning and design process, they
identified a potential risk from flooding, a risk that was
kept at the forefront of their minds as they struggled
to complete the building works during the torrential
downpours of the Summer and Autumn of 2008. |
To protect their investment against the potentially
devastating effects of flooding they approached
Floodgate and, between us, we came up with a
solution that gives them total peace of mind.
In total, we designed a solution that incorporated 7
off-the-shelf floodgates together with one custom
made XXL gate to provide complete protection. Each
floodgate can be put in place in around 2 minutes and,
when not in use, can be stored out of the way.
Stuart Price said, “All through this project, we have
wanted to make sure that we get everything right and
that extends to making sure that what we have set up
here is protected from flooding.
Floodgate have been very helpful in making sure that
we fully understood how to integrate the gates into the
design of the renovation and that we have the easiest
possible solution in terms of putting the gates in place
whenever we get flood warinings.”
